Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle marks one of the major turning points in the history of psychoanalysis. By introducing the second topography of the mind, Freud laid the foundation for later theories concerned with those aspects of psychic life that elude representation, symbolizatipn, and conscious thought.
It was from this work that Winnicott, Bion, Green, and the Paris Psychosomatic School drew inspiration as they developed new ways of understanding psychic transformation, emotional regulation, and the realm of unrepresented experience.
We warmly invite you to join Howard B. Levine as he offers his own integrative perspective on the legacy of this groundbreaking text and its significance for contemporary psychoanalytic practice.

Howard B. Levine is a member of APsA, PINE, the Contemporary Freudian Society, and Pulsion. He teaches in the Contemporary Freudian Track at New York University and serves on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Inquiry. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Routledge Wilfred Bion Studies Book Series and maintains a private psychoanalytic practice in Brookline, Massachusetts.
He is the author of Transformations de l’Irreprésentable (Ithaque, 2019) and Affect, Representation and Language: Between the Silence and the Cry (Routledge, 2022). He has also edited numerous important volumes, including The Post-Bionian Field Theory of Antonino Ferro (Routledge, 2022), The Freudian Matrix of André Green: Towards a Psychoanalysis for the 21st Century by André Green (Routledge/IPA, 2023), and André Green’s On the Destruction and Death Drives (Phoenix/Karnac, 2023).

Franco De Masi
Franco De Masi is one of the foremost contemporary psychoanalysts specializing in psychosis and a Training and Supervising Analyst of the Italian Psychoanalytical Society (SPI). He is the author of numerous books and articles, including his most recent publication, No Smartphone. Come proteggere la mente dei bambini e degli adolescenti. Many of his works have also been published in Polish.

Thomas P. Helscher, PhD, PsyD, FIPA
Thomas P. Helscher, PhD, PsyD, FIPA is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies (LAISPS) and serves on the faculty of LAISPS and the Wilfred R. Bion Institute of Los Angeles (WILA). He is one of the most original contemporary psychoanalysts advancing a creative dialogue between the ideas of Wilfred Bion, Jacques Lacan, and André Green. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including Bion's Theory of Thinking and Touching the Real: Bion, Lacan, and the Ontological Turn in Psychoanalysis.
In the coming months, we will also be joined by Avner Bergstein, Rudi Vermote, Nicola Abel-Hirsch and Rodrigo Barahona.

About the Project
Psychoanalytic Harbour
Psychoanalytic Harbour was born out of a love of psychoanalysis and a commitment to seeking truth through a deeper understanding of emotional experience.
Our aim is to create a space for the exchange of clinical experience and contemporary psychoanalytic thinking. We seek to foster an environment that encourages reflection, creative thinking, and a sustained engagement with the emotional truth of human experience.
Psychoanalytic Harbour offers an opportunity to meet and engage in dialogue with psychoanalysts from different parts of the world, who share their clinical experience and distinctive ways of thinking. At the heart of the project lies a living dialogue, openness to diverse perspectives, and a shared exploration of the complexity of psychic life. The psychoanalytic thought of Wilfred R. Bion occupies a particularly important place within the project.
The project is open to psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, candidates in psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic training, and anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the human mind. All meetings are held online and are simultaneously interpreted into Polish and English, creating a truly international space for dialogue and the exchange of psychoanalytic ideas.
About Us
Founded by
Psychoanalytic Harbour was founded by Justyna Zalewska and Karolina Bertrand, psychoanalysts of the Polish Psychoanalytical Society and members of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). They are also training psychotherapists and supervisors of the Polish Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
They are united by a shared passion for psychoanalysis, a deep curiosity about human experience, and a commitment to creating a space for thoughtful dialogue and the exchange of psychoanalytic ideas.
A central source of inspiration for the project is the psychoanalytic thought of Wilfred R. Bion, with particular attention to the realm of unmentalized experience.
The project is co-created by Agnieszka Sobolewska, a specialist in new technologies and cybersecurity with extensive experience in digital marketing and user experience (UX) design. She completed postgraduate studies in Internet Marketing at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) and in User Experience Design at SWPS University.
Justyna Zalewska
Training Analyst, Training Psychotherapist and Supervisor
Justyna Zalewska is a Training Analyst of the Polish Psychoanalytical Society and a Training Psychotherapist and Supervisor of the Polish Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
She is actively engaged in the development of contemporary psychoanalytic thinking, with a particular interest in the work of Wilfred R. Bion. She conducts seminars and clinical supervisions within public mental health services throughout the Tri-City region (Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia), as well as seminars for candidates of the Polish Psychoanalytical Society and psychoanalytic psychotherapists.
She teaches the Studying Bion seminar series throughout Poland and is the founder of the Bion Symposium in Gdańsk, which she developed into a recurring forum for psychoanalytic dialogue within the Polish Psychoanalytical Society.
Her publications include the co-authored volume Cinema and Psychoanalysis (in Polish), for which she wrote the chapter The Beksińskis: A Videophonic Album. Her article Food Refusal as an Infant’s Response to Contact with the Mother’s Disturbed Internal World: Observations in a Naturalistic Setting (in Polish) appeared in the volume Finding One’s Place: Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in Poland, published by the Polish Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
Her paper The Analyst’s Hallucination as a Manifestation of Osmotic Communication was published in The Psychoanalytic Review (September 2024).
She also collaborates with COWAP (Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis) within the European Psychoanalytic Federation (EPF).
Justyna Zalewska is in private practice, working with adults in Gdynia, Poland.
Karolina Bertrand
Psychoanalyst, Training Psychotherapist and Supervisor
Karolina Bertrand is a psychoanalyst of the Polish Psychoanalytical Society and a Training Psychotherapist and Supervisor of the Polish Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
She works from a psychoanalytic perspective, with particular attention to the processes emerging within the therapeutic relationship, viewing them as a pathway towards an ever deeper encounter with emotional truth. She maintains a clinical practice with adults in Gdynia, Poland.
She is a former member of the Board of the Pomeranian Branch of the Polish Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and currently serves on the Organising Committee of the Bion Symposium in Gdańsk, hosted by the Polish Psychoanalytical Society.
Within Psychoanalytic Harbour, she co-creates a space dedicated to dialogue and the further development of psychoanalytic thinking.
Agnieszka Sobolewska is a specialist in new technologies and cybersecurity with extensive experience in digital marketing and user experience (UX) design. She completed postgraduate studies in Internet Marketing at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) and in User Experience Design at SWPS University.
